What is AGI?

AGI- Artificial General Intelligence…. What if I told you that we are closer to experiencing the real Terminators rather than being closer to when the first Terminator movie came out?? Fascinating isn't it? But it is just as scary as how captivating it is.

AGI in layman's terms translates to computers becoming as intelligent as human beings or even more intelligent than us and can think for themselves unlike the present day AI. In the technical aspect, It is a type of Artificial Intelligence that can match or surpass human capabilities across a wide range of cognitive tasks. Meta and OpenAI are currently the front runners of the AGI development. Before getting deeper into AGI, Artificial Intelligence is of several types but summing all of it together it can be divided into weak AI and strong AI. Almost every AI we currently use is a part of the Weak AI, as of July 2024 there is no evident example of Strong AI, but taking movies into consideration robots from the Will Smith movie and Chitti from Enthiran are classical examples of Strong AI.

But we wonder if there are only downsides to the AGI development, that truly isn’t the case. Not to deny it completely but rather platonically it can either be a complete utopian state where humans shall have complete control of the AGI or the super-intelligent robots. But looking back on the evolution of how AI shaped into what we have now, in the year 2017 Facebook[Meta now] had to shut down its very own AI since they started communicating among themselves in a language that humans couldn’t understand. Scary isn’t it, but similarly on the other side of the coin. AGI robots/machinery can be used for exploring the underwater, caves, etc… which is highly risky for humans to explore. They can also be used for creating breakthroughs in discovering cures for some of the deadly diseases at ease since they can go through n number of probabilities at ease.

In conclusion, AGI will be the grandchild of the AI that we have now which might just be exponentially smarter than human beings. Worst case scenario a century from now humans shall no longer be the dominant species of the planet Earth, and might also be forced to flee the planet and the unfortunate ones who do not get to flee the planet might end up being slaves to the super-intelligent robots which we had developed earlier.
